Starfarers of Catan

It’s no exaggeration to say that when Settlers of Catan came on the scene in 1995, it changed board gaming worldwide. The randomized board and resources gave it great replayability, and with the simple worker placement and scoring, it became an ideal gateway game for new players to get into the hobby.

But it got old.

Expansions could only add so much value without spoiling the elegant simplicity that made it popular in the first place.

Enter: Starfarers of Catan.

While the name suggests a quick palette swap from terrestrial terrain to planets, Mayfair Games took the change a whole lot farther.

While retaining the basic ideas of a variable playing area from playthrough to playthrough and the basic system of resource randomizing and distribution, the game play took on a whole new complexity.

Players gained ships. These ships had tech levels for cargo, speed, and firepower. Turns included movement to explore planets for resources. Random events fired off via an exploration deck. Instead of cities, you build space stations. Instead of roads, you upgraded your ship.

OK. It’s a good enough game. Maybe not as iconic as the original, but let me convince you of this game’s awesomeness with one last factor:

THE SHIPS!

Each player actually gets a plastic model rocketship in all its retrofuturist glory! It’s not tiny, either. You affix all your ship upgrades directly to it, plugging, clipping, and snapping them into places predesignated around the model’s exterior. And better yet? The underside includes a pop-o-matic style randomizer with colored balls that are used in place of dice rolls for cards and events.

This game is worth trying out just for the novelty of the ship mechanics alone.

My own set is old enough to drink. The ships, sadly, have not withstood the test of time. But I keep my old copy of Starfarers of Catan as a trophy nonetheless.

THAT is a testament to a good game.
